Built for slow practice

A house with thequiet to actually rest.

Santa Teresa has been a quiet capital of yoga and breathwork for fifteen years — Pranamar's beachfront shala, Horizon's ridge deck, Nancy Goodfellow's embodied Tantra Vinyasa at House of Shakti, plus the new generation of recovery clubs (re:center, Somos, Activo) running PEMF, dual cold plunges, infrared saunas, and red light. The Nicoya Peninsula sits in a Blue Zone — the climate, the food, and the pace are part of why people live measurably longer here.

Casa Calyx sits ten minutes above the studios. The deck is the first studio. Below — the six rituals that hold the week, the eight-stop rhythm of a day of practice, the addresses you'll come to know by name, and three things the town has on the record.

The six rituals

What the week feels like.

The shape of a wellness week at Casa Calyx — sunrise practice, the studio classes, the cold plunge, the pool, the private session, the sleep. Pin these in your head before you book.

The rhythm

A day of practice.Eight stops, sunrise to dinner.

Hover or tap a time to see where you'll be. Skip what doesn't fit you — most days look like this within the first week. The point is to mix, not march through.

  1. 05:30

    Sunrise on the deck

Roll a mat on the deck before anyone else is up. The canopy is in earshot. Twenty minutes of breath, then the practice that fits the body that day.

  2. 07:30

    Acai · Namore

Walk down for cold-pressed greens and a deep acai bowl. Or stay home — the kitchen handles a clean breakfast in ten minutes.

  3. 09:30

    Studio class

Vinyasa on the ridge deck at Horizon, the sunrise-into-mid-morning class. Or Tantra Vinyasa with Nancy at House of Shakti. Real practice, not vacation yoga.

  4. 12:00

  5. 14:00

    Pool · daybed · quiet

The afternoon belongs to nothing. Float, nap on the daybed by the open doors, read on the deck. The point of the day is what you don't do.

  6. 16:00

    Sauna + cold plunge

Walk to Somos for the cedar sauna and cold plunge campus, or re:center for the deeper recovery circuit (infrared, red light, PEMF, compression).

  7. 18:00

    Sunset class · Blue Mist

Yoga Nidra at the bamboo shala twelve minutes north at Hermosa. Or a sound bath if one's scheduled. The day winds down on the mat.

  8. 19:30

    Dinner, light

Ani's for the brunch-for-dinner move. Or Corazón again — it works twice in a day. Asleep by ten. Tomorrow starts at sunrise.

Santa Teresa · the receipts

Three thingsthat aren't our take.

The town earned its reputation as a wellness destination long before this listing. A few signals worth knowing about the place before you book.

  1. Blue Zone

The Nicoya Peninsula is one of five.

One of the world's five regions where people live measurably longer (Dan Buettner's Blue Zones research, National Geographic). The climate, the food, the pace — they're part of why.

  2. 6 studios on foot

Densest wellness town for its size.

Pranamar, Horizon, Blue Mist, House of Shakti, Believe — plus two reformer rooms (This Way Movement, Happilates). All within walking distance of the gate. Travel + Leisure has called Santa Teresa “a Blue Zone darling.”

  3. Most advanced recovery

    On the Nicoya Peninsula.

re:center runs PEMF therapy, dual cold plunges, infrared and dry saunas, red light, professional compression, and a 24/7 gym. Day passes from $60 — and the daily community sauna is open to drop-ins at 6pm.

A note from a real practice week

“Sunrise on the deck before the studio. Plunge after the surf. Dinner light. Asleep by ten. By day four I'd stopped checking my phone. That's what I came for.”

Sunset Horseback Ride

Sunset beach horseback rides leave the southern end of Playa Santa Teresa about 90 minutes before the sun drops — local outfitters lead small groups along the surf line as the sky turns. Most rides last 90 minutes; the horses know the route by heart. No experience required, but long pants, a hat, and reef-safe sunscreen all help. Year-round, but the dry season has the most reliable golden hour.

The tour leaves Santa Teresa around sunset, runs a small boat into a sheltered bay after dark, and returns by 9pm. It is the most surreal hour you'll spend in Costa Rica, and only possible a few nights a month.

Mal País Tide Pools

Just south of Santa Teresa, where the coast turns from sand into volcanic rock, the Mal País tide pools fill with starfish, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and tropical fish trapped by the receding ocean. Time it within an hour of low tide — the morning low works best in dry season when the sun catches the water. Bring water shoes (the rocks are sharp), a mask if you want to look closely, and pair with a Mal País lunch on the way back.

TipBest on a falling tide — the pools are still full and animals are most active.

Whole fish, fresh pasta, a wine list that doesn't quit — the kind of three-hour dinner you book around for an entire trip. Open Thursday through Sunday only; reservations essential in dry season.

Beach dinner in Montezuma

Playa de los Artistas (Montezuma)

A beachside Mediterranean kitchen in Montezuma, half-buried in the sand under driftwood lanterns and string lights. Whole fish, fresh pasta, a wine list that doesn't quit — the kind of three-hour dinner you book around for an entire trip. Open Thursday through Sunday only; reservations essential in dry season. Pair with a Montezuma waterfall morning for the easiest day-trip combo from Santa Teresa.

Brukas

The sunset dinner address. Brukas (locals call it La Bruca) sits on a hill above town with the cleanest west-facing deck in Santa Teresa — wooden tables under a corrugated roof, candles at dusk, the whole Pacific dropping into the horizon while you eat. Pumpkin ravioli, ribeye, a wine list that takes itself seriously. Reservation territory in dry season.

TipBook a 6pm table to catch the sun. Top tables on the rail go first.

Banana Beach

The headline beach club in Santa Teresa — daybed loungers, oceanfront drinks, and DJ sets that take over from sunset. Wednesday is the cult midweek night with a name DJ; Saturdays draw the bigger weekend crowd. The kitchen runs ceviche and tropical cocktails all afternoon, so the day-into-evening transition is the move.

TipWednesdays for the music, Sundays for the slow day-into-sunset.

TipBook day-of by 2pm. Three operators work the south end — ask us which we trust this season.

Bioluminescence Tour

On moonless nights in the Gulf of Nicoya, plankton light up around any movement — drag a hand through the water and it glows blue-green; jump in and your whole body lights up. The tour leaves Santa Teresa around sunset, runs a small boat into a sheltered bay after dark, and returns by 9pm. It is the most surreal hour you'll spend in Costa Rica, and only possible a few nights a month.

TipBook around the new moon for the strongest effect — within three days either side.

Book the week. We'll line up the practice.

Tell us which teacher or studio you're drawn to in your inquiry — Nancy from House of Shakti for a private session on the deck, the day pass at re:center, or the sunrise class at Pranamar booked for your first morning. Peak retreat weeks (Oct–Nov, Jan–Mar) tend to book 6–10 weeks out.

Questions

Wellness FAQ

Can I practice yoga on the villa deck?

+

Yes — the deck is flat, open, shaded by canopy, and quiet at sunrise. A yoga mat can be at the villa on request, or rented in town for the week ($5/day, $25/week at most studios). The deck is large enough for two practitioners.

Can you arrange private yoga sessions at the villa?

+

Yes. Nancy Goodfellow of House of Shakti teaches private Tantra Vinyasa + embodiment sessions at the villa, plus a small list of other trusted teachers. 75–90 minutes, from $90–120 per session.

When is the best retreat season?

+

Two peak windows: October–November (transition season, fewest surf tourists, biggest retreat schedule) and January–March (high-season demand, biggest international teacher rotations). Book 6–10 weeks out for peak weeks.

What does a yoga or reformer class cost?

+

Yoga drop-ins $15–25; class packs drop to $12–18. Weekly unlimited at Pranamar or Horizon $90–120. Reformer Pilates drop-ins $30–40; the 3-class intro at This Way Movement is the best-value entry.

Is re:center worth the day pass?

+

Yes — at least one full day in your week, especially after surf days. The $60–80 pass includes a class plus the full circuit (dual cold plunges, infrared sauna, red light, PEMF, compression, 24/7 gym).
